Charlotte Mason stated that “Self-education is the only possible education; the rest is mere veneer laid on the surface of a child’s nature.” With this statement as the pinnacle ideal of everything that is taught in this method of education, a homeschool mother must secure in her mind what contributes to self-education. Dollie Freeman has devoted her homeschool journey to unlock the mysteries of self-educating inside Charlotte Mason’s original writings to discover the four roles of a teacher that naturally leads to self-education. Day 2: Early Years, Nature Study & Handicrafts

Before Curriculum: Using Charlotte Mason's Educational Tools in your Home

Bring the Charlotte Mason philosophy into practical application no matter your circumstances. In her philosophy, Charlotte Mason gives three tools for educating our children: atmosphere, discipline, and life. These tools give us the ‘how-to’ of the Charlotte Mason way, whether you have toddlers or high schoolers. In this session, deepen your understanding of these tools and develop a vision for how to use them in your home now. This session will be especially helpful to those who want to apply the Charlotte Mason philosophy outside of traditional, formal lessons, including those in the early years, families who are deschooling, or even those on summer vacation.

Handicrafts for Whole Body Learning

Charlotte Mason tells us that “the child is only truly educated who can use his hands as truly as his head, for to neglect one part of our being injures the whole.” Handicrafts are often nudged aside as an “extra” but in truth, developing the creative side of the brain and learning to use one’s hand is just as important as arithmetic and reading. Children can learn handicraft skills that challenge their capabilities, bless others, and make the world a more beautiful place. When handicrafts become part of the atmosphere of your home, children will develop fine motor skills, creativity, self-awareness, and so much more. This workshop will include details on how to introduce handicrafts in the early years and during formal lessons as well as ideas on handicrafts to get started.

Learning & Teaching History from a Biblical Worldview

In this session, Angela dives into the hows and whys of teaching history from a Biblical worldview. As an author who has worked for more than a decade to produce history curriculum that reaches into the heart of the student, she shares her heart and passion for teaching history in a fresh and relevant way for this generation of homeschooling parents and children. A few of the topics covered in this workshop: I don't want to teach my children a religiously sterilized version of history. What does history from a Biblical worldview look like? Why is it important to learn history from a Biblical worldview? Isn't history just history? My kids don't like history; how do I make it interesting to draw them in? Spirit Led Homeschooling

As homeschool moms, we feel the pressure to do everything we can possibly do to make sure our children succeed. That is a lot of pressure, but what if it is not really up to us? Charlotte Mason challenged us to trust the Holy Spirit as the ultimate leader and teacher. We should not only pray over our curriculum, but we must fully embrace the belief that the God of the universe is also the God of math, science, reading, and all subjects. Charlotte Mason calls this, "the great recognition, that God the Holy Spirit is Himself, personally, the Imparter of Knowledge, the Instructor of Youth, the Inspirer of Genius." She believed that "every fruitful idea, every original conception, whether in Euclid, or grammar, or music, was a direct inspiration from the Holy Spirit." We should teach everything in a way that leaves room for the Holy Spirit to do His work.
